∂AIL Dr. D. E. Kelly↓Department of Anatomy↓UCLA School of Medicine
↓2025 Zonal Avenue↓Los Angeles, California 90033$$Recommendation for Arthur Thomas∞

Dear Dr. Kelly:

Arthur Thomas came to Stanford as an interdisciplinary graduate student in
July 1971. He has just finished a thesis entitled %2Representation and Perception:
An Essay in Computational Metaphysics%*
and is now revising it in accordance
with the wishes of his committee. I am confident that he will produce a
version that will be satisfactory to all of us.

Thomas's interests range over psychology, neurophysiology, philosophy and
artificial intelligence, and he has a wide knowledge of all of these areas.
His thesis undertakes the difficult task of discussing the relationships
of these fields in a manner that does justice to all of them.

I think he will make a good professor because he is intelligence, particulate,
and highly motivated to pursue his ideas to a conclusion. Our interdisciplinary
program has not, to my knowledge, given him teaching experience, but I
think he has the articulateness and the ability to organize his thoughts that
make for successful teaching.
